Anybody who knows DC knows that Brookland is one of the safest, cutest little neighborhoods in the district! I was really excited to visit apartments in this area. Brookland Ridge represents the neighborhood very well.
This is an affordable, pet-friendly, metro accessible, gorgeous, tucked-away location that you will love! Unlike a lot of apartments, you get a complimentary parking pass with your rent. Needless to say, the Brookland metro on the Red line is only a street and a half over.
There is a small $25 application fee and a deposit for pets. Like most ni ce places, the deposit amount depends on your credit and rental history. The closest major street is Michigan Ave and there are two universities, two grocery stores, a library, an elementary school, a jogging path, restaurants, and cafes within walking distance.
The apartments themselves are the perfect size for a couple or small family. Some of the rentals even have a balcony. Although the apartments seem like they would be small on the outside, they are surprisingly spacious and the layout is great. The apartments range from the low $1400′s to the mid $1600′s and the company that owns the property (Horning Bros) has a lot of other rentals in oth er quadrants.
I would give Brookland Ridge 8 out of 10.

There isn’t much to say about this place…seriously. The size is ok. It’s kinda far from a metro. There’s no central air. There’s a laundry room in the basement. There are hardwood floors. There’s a locked entrance, but the door was ajar when I went to visit. The building is literally a brick block. It’s not impressive, but its not horrible either. The windows, kitchen, and bathroom are really small, but the bedroom and living room are decent. They were the best part of the apartment.

When you walk in there’s also a huge mirror in the lobby before you go up the stairs. It made me think the apartment would have a bunch of neat little quirks like that, but I was mistaken. I’m not sure, but I think I also saw a roach. I don’t do roaches. That ended the tour for me. I mean, I still there, but I couldn’t focus on much the leasing agent was saying. I do remember that the stove seems to be really old and the tub needed to be bleached.

Utilities are extra, which was unexpected. One good thing was that I didn’t see a lot of people lounging around outside. The building is about three blocks from Georgia Avenue. There are two high schools in walking distance, but the nearest grocery store is a bit of a hike. You can see the police station from the front door, which was refreshing. If you drive, there’s a bit of a scramble for parking space. There are two other complexes in walking distance and a lot of residential homes along Peabody as well as 8 th street.

I was happy to hop back on the 62 bus without looking back. I give this place 6 out of 10.

Do you enjoy shopping, being near the ‘beautiful people’ and ritzy art exhibits? Well get out your embroidered silk robe and find your way to Harvard Hall! People who enjoy Friday nights at There are hardwood floors, but the place makes up fort hat with these really cool sunrooms! I didn’t see any other apartments with that as a feature.

The closet space would make Carrie Bradshaw drool. Any girl would feel like a New Yorker with the lobby staff welcoming you every time you pass by. Don’t worry, though. I’m sure the prices helped them keep a smile on their faces. Rent can be up to $1800 for a two-bedroom apartment. It’s a really busy area, so I would recommend getting a reserved parking space if you value your vehicle.

When I looked up the apartment, however, there were some negative safety reports in the Washington City Paper about fire alarms that didn’t work last year. Of course, no fires occurred during my visit, so I don’t have any first hand info, but the article quoted several residents who complained about safety.

I want to give Harvard Hall 9.5 for the ambiance and neighborhood, but with the safety accusations, I’m going to give the complex 8 out of 10.

Since I saw one SE apartment that was really great, I decided to ignore the stereotypes about SE and look at more apartments in that quadrant. After work one day, I decided to roam around Southeast in search of a new place. Just a mile or so from the Anacostia stop on the Green line was Greenwood Manor. I didn’t set an appointment, just walked in to the leasing office. The landscape was gorgeous and it didn’t feel like a big city when you looked at the garden. The apartment is in Anacostia, but the outside is nothing like the river. There’s a nice park and a Rec, both walking distance from the apartment complex so you can stay fit with little worry.

The person who showed me the apartment bragged about the spacious closets, but there were average size to me. Greenwood Manor would benefit from being carpeting, because the hardwood didn’t really work in the apartment. They just brought down the overall look to me. The ad I saw also said they were close to a metro, so I didn’t drive, but when I got off the train I ended up walking about 20-30 minutes. That is NOT close.

Sorry pet lovers, you can’t bring Ms. Fluffy or Captain Puddles. As a consolation prize, though there is a nice sized laundry room. The equipment seemed pretty new, which is more than I can say for some complexes. Greenwood Manor is one of those places that you wouldn’t hate to live in, but it also wouldn’t be in your top 5.

I give Greenwood Manor 7 out of 10.

Now this is the type of apartment you get when you’re on your “grown” game. The residencies at Georgia Avenue are not the average place. Have you ever seen the “I’m a Mac. I’m a PC” commercials? Well this is where the Mac would live. If you don’t have matching furniture and a business line, this probably isn’t the place for you.

There is an organic grocery store that has some of the freshest fruit and veggies you’ll ever eat! The staff really made me feel at home and answered all of my questions. The floor in the kitchenette makes you want to glide across in your socks and the carpet is plush enough to fall asleep on. If you generally cook for a big crowd, you’ll love this place! The apartment I saw had enough cabinets to store food for the winter with space left over. One (small) problem was that the dining space wasn’t really big enough to move around for a big group, so if you have kids or a spouse who isn’t petite, you may run into a bit of a challenge in my opinion. Other than that, the entire apartment seemed like it was built yesterday.

To really feel like an executive, you HAVE to step out onto the balcony. The view is more than amazing. There’s a private garage for resident if you drive. This is a really nice place if you’re transitioning from an apartment, but aren’t yet ready to own a home. You have to meet some salary requirements…this is one of the first places I visited that had both a minimum and maximum income requirement, which is interesting. (About $35,000-$60,000 depending on how many people are on the lease) This complex represents really nice middle class living and you get A LOT for the price. (Their two bedroom rentals are over 800 sq ft)

This complex is pretty much perfect. I give it 10 out of 10.

In order to get in the building, you have to have a key, so it’s pretty secure. I saw residents pulling up the door to make sure it locked, and no one let me in when I was waiting for the leasing agent, so they seem serious about it (unlike other places I’ve seen). That was really encouraging because as someone from out of town, you always hear crazy stories about Southeast DC. When I walked in, the downstairs lobby reminded me of a really classy hotel. I felt like a 30’s actress or something. You’ll have your own bathroom even if you get the two-bedroom apartment. The apartments have balconies (which I absolutely LOVE) and the view is simply amazing. You can the capital off in the distance and utilities are already in the rent, which is convenient. It helps this complex creep to the top of my list. The rent for a two-bedroom is just above $1250, which is worth it, (minus the lack of metro accessibility.)

There aren’t any metro stations nearby, but there’s a bus that stops right in front of the place. There’s also a lot of parking space if you own a car. The residents seem to mostly be families, rather than crazy college kids, so that’s a plus if you prefer a place that’s quiet at night.

The entire apartment is carpeting and the kitchen is HUGE! They had one of the best kitchens I think I’ve seen since I moved to DC. There’s a whole lot of cabinet and counter space, so it’s a really great apartment for people who love making big meals regularly. (I happen to be one of those people)

I give Marbury Plaza 9 out of 10!

A few years back I had visited 3001 Park Center Apartments and was mildly impressed. After visiting again recently I noticed that they had renovated, and all I could think was “What a delightful place.” These are mid rise rental apartments in Alexandria Virginia that have all of the features of an apartment in the city without all of the hustle and bustle.

Upon entering the secured foyer you immediately notice the concierge that is undoubtedly smiling and awaiting your arrival. The aroma of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies meets you at the door along with a bright eyed and bushy tailed leasing consultant. You immediately feel at home.

After taking the guided tour through the business center, pool and sauna area, full sized gym, deli, and ultra chic and modern club room, I was quite surprised to learn that the apartments were relatively spacious, and had a room-mate style design. The bay windows allowed for an immaculate amount of light and a beautiful scenic view of the city. My guess is that at the end of the day anyone who lives here clicks their heels together 3 times and says: “there is no place like 3001!”

Not sure what Eppert and Roper would say but I give it 2 thumbs up!
My suggestion: Visit their website (www.3001parkcenter.com) and call to schedule an appointment today!
